What is Pilates?
Pilates promotes a mind-body focus incorporating balance, flexibility and resistance training where we stretch what is tight and strengthen what is weak. Pilates is about posture and finding and maintaining a neutral spine so the weight of your body can travel through the center of your joints. When one is aligned (closest to neutral) you can move with ease avoiding tension and pain.
Pilates is a system of exercises that offers efficiency of movement with support for your spine and weight of your body. Pilates teaches you how to find and engage your core ‘stabilizer muscles’(muscles closest to the spine) that support your spine and keep your body balanced and mobile.
Starting at the base of the spine we connect to your pelvic floor and transversus abdominal muscles before firing up the larger muscles as they supportive to your spine and help you maintain a stable pelvis throughout movement.
Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates who believed that the practice of living in a sound mind and sound body was the key to living a useful and happy life.
